Hotel Villas Balam Ya
What we like about these villas is the arithmetic: four of them, spread through gardens...
The road out of Panajachel climbs and then hangs above Lake Atitlan, and at kilometre 6.8 it passes a gate that opens onto a house built down the slope rather than across it. Everything at Casa Palopo faces one way. Terraces, pools, bedrooms and both restaurants look over the water towards Toliman, Atitlan and San Pedro, the three cones that close the far shore and change colour through the day. The village of Santa Catarina Palopo, known for the blue of its huipiles and for the painted houses climbing its hillside, is just below. The house was among the first in the country to be taken seriously by the international guides, and it wears that lightly.
We kept it because the lake has many views and very few houses that know what to do with one. This one is small, turned entirely towards the water, and decorated with handwoven Guatemalan textiles and a collection of art hung as it would be in a private home rather than a lobby. It was the first property in Guatemala admitted to Relais and Chateaux, and it holds a Michelin Key, which together say something about consistency rather than scale. Two restaurants, a spa, pools on different terraces, and a boat at the dock are the whole of it, and the whole of it is enough.
Santa Catarina Palopo sits on the quiet eastern shore, close enough to Panajachel for supplies and far enough for silence. The advantage is the boat: villages that are an hour apart by road are fifteen minutes apart on the water, so San Juan, Santiago and San Marcos become an afternoon rather than an expedition. The hotel arranges the crossing and a shuttle from the capital, which takes the road out of the equation entirely. Walking down into the village is the other pleasure, and the walk back up is the reason to take the hotel car.
Price: Luxe
Vibe: Coloured, collected, turned to the water
Rooms: Deluxe rooms and deluxe suites in the main lakeside house, plus a separate villa with its own pool
Best For: Couples, honeymoons, small groups taking the villa, and travellers who want one base for the whole lake
Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: Kinnik at dusk, with the fire lit at the water edge and the volcanoes going dark behind it
Dining: Two restaurants, Kinnik on the shore and Palopo 6.8 for seasonal cooking, with Guatemalan produce running through both
Amenities: Spa, pools on several terraces, private villa pool, boat access to the lake villages, shuttle from Guatemala City
Attractions: Santa Catarina Palopo and its weaving, the painted houses of the village, San Juan and Santiago Atitlan by boat, Panajachel
Kinnik is the one people remember: a fire lit space at the bottom of the property, on the shore, where dinner runs long because nobody wants to climb back up. Palopo 6.8 is the more composed of the two, a seasonal menu that follows what the lake and the highlands are giving. Between them they cover a week without repetition, which matters at a house where leaving for dinner means a boat or a car. Guatemalan produce, coffee and chocolate run through both, and the wine list is longer than the setting suggests.
The main house holds deluxe rooms and deluxe suites, all of them facing the lake, dressed in the blues and reds of local weaving against white walls. The villa sits apart with its own pool and a panorama of its own, and it is the answer for a family or two couples travelling together who want the house without sharing it. Terraces are private rather than shared, which is the detail that makes the difference here: the view is the room, and you are not asked to look at it in company.
The hotel arranges a shuttle from Guatemala City, which is the simplest way to arrive and avoids the lake road after dark. From the dock, boats leave for the villages on the western shore and a guide can be arranged for the weaving workshops of San Juan. Check in is late afternoon and check out early, so plan the first and last days around the boat rather than the other way round. The terrain is steep throughout, with steps between levels and no lift.
