A Spa at the Quiet End of the Grid

Antigua's small hotels tend to trade on period detail and stop there. Los Pasos keeps the colonial frame, cobbles at the door and terraces looking over tiled roofs to the volcanoes, then adds what a period house usually cannot: a spa, a restaurant with a wine cellar, and a master suite with a jacuzzi in it. Seventeen rooms over two floors on 9 Calle Oriente, at the southern edge of the grid where the streets go quiet after dark. It is the least self-conscious of Antigua's five-star addresses, and that is meant as praise.

Why It Works

Most visitors to Antigua walk a great deal, on cobbles, at altitude, and often after a volcano. A hotel with a spa in it is therefore not a luxury but a piece of planning, and Los Pasos is one of very few in the historic centre that has one. The rooms are larger than the city average, the biggest running to thirty-seven square metres with a living area and a private jacuzzi. Several suites connect, which makes the house work for a family. And a restaurant with a wine cellar means one evening you need not go out at all.

Why This Location

9 Calle Oriente runs along the southern edge of the colonial grid, a few blocks below the Parque Central. The walk to the plaza and the cathedral ruins takes a handful of minutes, the Santa Catalina arch a little more, and the craft market sits on the other side of town. What the address gives you is quiet: this end of Antigua is residential, the tour groups do not come down here, and the terraces have a clear run over the roofs to Agua. The capital and its airport are about an hour away.

Suites Measured in Square Metres, Not Adjectives

Three categories carry most of the house. The Master Suite King is the one to book: thirty-seven square metres with a separate living area, a walk-in shower and a private jacuzzi. Below it, Suite King and Suite Queen both run to twenty-six square metres, spread across the first and second floors, the Queen taking two beds. Several are adjacent and can be opened up for a family. Terraces are attached where the building allows, and those are where the volcano view is.

The Table and the Wine Cellar

The restaurant is a proper one rather than a breakfast room with ambitions. The kitchen works traditional Guatemalan recipes alongside international dishes, and there is a wine cellar behind it, unusual at this scale in Antigua and a sign that the list has been chosen rather than inherited. In a city with as many good tables as this one, having a reason to stay in for an evening is worth something.

Weddings, Meetings and Taking the House

The house takes small weddings and corporate meetings, which explains some of its character: the public spaces are more generous than a seventeen-room hotel needs, and the staff are used to organising things. On an ordinary stay this shows up as competence rather than clutter, and the same team will put together a city tour, a coffee farm visit or a car to the capital. For a group, taking the whole house is a conversation worth having.
