Antigua is a city of small houses turned into small hotels, and for most visits that is exactly right. Camino Real Antigua is the exception, and it is useful precisely because it is one. A hundred rooms behind a colonial front on 7a Calle Poniente, with gardens, an outdoor pool and a jacuzzi built for a crowd, a spa, a fitness room, and four conference rooms that between them seat a hundred and fifty people. The architecture keeps the register of the city, low and arcaded around courtyards. What changes is what the house can actually do for you.

Why It Works

There are trips where a seven-room house is the wrong answer: a family with children, a group travelling together, a first night after a long flight, a week that mixes meetings with sightseeing. Camino Real covers all of them without leaving the colonial grid. The room count means there is availability when the small houses are full, and the range runs from singles up to the Virrey and Royal suites. Two rooms are built for guests with reduced mobility, which in Antigua is close to unheard of.

Why This Location

7a Calle Poniente runs west from the Parque Central, and the hotel is four blocks along it, roughly six minutes on foot from the cathedral ruins and the plaza. The craft market is closer still. The Calle del Arco, with the Santa Catalina arch, is a short walk north, and Cerro de la Cruz, for the view over the grid to Agua, sits at the top of town. Guatemala City and its airport are around forty-five minutes by road. Being on the west side also means quieter streets in the evening than the arch end.
