Hotel Soleil La Antigua
We picked this address for the one thing no other Antigua hotel can claim: a...
Fourth Avenue South is residential in the way the edges of Antigua still are, walled houses and doorways rather than shopfronts, and the walk into the centre takes about ten minutes. The house at number 24 was a private mansion before it was a hotel, and the conversion left the bones alone: a planted courtyard at the middle, rooms opening onto it, a stair up to a terrace that clears the neighbouring roofs. A pool sits in the garden. The art on the walls is Guatemalan and chosen rather than bought by the metre. Adults only, throughout, which is the decision that sets the tone of the whole place.
We kept it because the quiet is structural rather than incidental. The street is residential, the house takes no children, and the layout keeps the rooms facing a garden instead of a road. Twenty six rooms is small enough for the restaurant to cook to order and large enough to justify a pool, a terrace and a fitness room. The three room categories are honest about what they are, each with its own decoration, and the largest carry a bathtub and a sitting area. Little here is for show, which in a town full of set dressing is the point.
Four blocks south of Parque Central puts you outside the busiest grid and inside the walkable one. The square, the cathedral and the restaurant streets are a short walk north, San Francisco church is close, and the road out towards the volcano viewpoints starts at this end of town, which matters if you are hiking or driving. Being off the main axes means cars pass rarely and voices carry less. Parking is on site and included, and the hotel will arrange transfers and guides.
Price: Premium
Vibe: Adult, planted, deliberately low key
Rooms: Around two dozen, in three categories, the larger ones with bathtub and sitting area

Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: The upstairs terrace, which puts the volcanoes above the tiled roofs at the end of the afternoon
Dining: Restaurant serving Guatemalan cooking, with breakfast a la carte, lunch, dinner and cocktails
Amenities: Garden courtyard, outdoor pool, roof terrace, fitness room, room service, on site parking, pets accepted
Attractions: Parque Central and the cathedral, four blocks; San Francisco church; the Santa Catalina arch; the craft market
The smallest category is a king room with a shower, the middle one adds a bathtub and a sitting area, and the largest gives two beds along with both. All of them are decorated individually with Guatemalan textiles, ceramics and painting, so the category tells you the space rather than the look. Rooms giving onto the courtyard are the quietest, which in a house this quiet is a fine distinction worth making anyway. Accessible rooms exist, and the ground floor layout makes that credible rather than nominal.
The garden courtyard is the centre of the house and does most of the work: planting dense enough to screen one table from the next, the pool at one side, and the restaurant opening onto it. Breakfast is cooked to order and taken there. The terrace upstairs is the other half of the argument, empty for most of the day and busy for the half hour before dinner, when the light turns and the two volcanoes to the south become the reason nobody goes down.
The house takes adults only, which is stated plainly rather than buried, and pets are accepted, which is rarer here than it sounds. Check in is mid afternoon and check out mid morning, and the desk holds luggage either side. The restaurant is open beyond breakfast, so dinner in the courtyard is a real option on the night you cannot face the walk. Transfers from the capital, guides and wedding arrangements are all handled in house.

We loved the courtyard first: a fountain-fed patio of greenery a single block from the...
